Overnight shipping is a five-step race against a 2:00–5:00 PM cutoff: measure the box, check the limits, pick a window, drop on time, and track to the promised morning deadline.
Step one is the scale and the tape. Weigh the packed box and record length, width, and height — the numbers every later decision depends on. Guessing here is how parcels get rejected at the counter.
Step two is eligibility. Check the weight against the caps — 70 lb (32 kg) for USPS, 150 lb (68 kg) for UPS and FedEx — and confirm length plus girth stays within 108 in (274 cm), where girth equals 2 × (width + height). The worked examples on Parcel Size and Weight Limits show the arithmetic.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
Step three is the bill. If the box is bulky, divide its volume by 139 cubic inches per pound: past that threshold the carrier bills dimensional weight, so a light carton can price like a heavy one. Better to know before the label is printed.
Step four is the window. Choose 8:00 AM (FedEx First Overnight), 8:00–9:00 AM (UPS Next Day Air Early), the 10:30 AM standard (FedEx Standard Overnight, UPS Next Day Air), or the 1–2 business-day USPS product — the full comparison sits on Express Shipping Delivery Times.
Step five is the race: drop the parcel before the local same-day cutoff, typically 2:00–5:00 PM, and keep the acceptance scan. Then track to the promised window — 10:30 AM for standard overnight — and remember the failure modes: missed cutoff, oversize box, dimensional re-bill, and the Friday trap when no Saturday service is selected.
